UGLY KID JOE, gegründet 1989 im kalifornischen Santa Barbara, erarbeiteten sich in den frühen 1990er Jahren internationalen Ruhm. Die Gründungsmitglieder der Band waren

Whitfield Crane (voc), Klaus Eichstadt (guit), Mark Davis (dr), Roger Lahr (guit) und Cordell Crockett (bs). Roger Lahr verließ Anfang 1992 die Band und wurde Im April durch den Sugartooth-Gitarristen Dave Fortman ersetzt.

Der Name Ugly Kid Joe ist eine Anspielung auf die in den 80ern recht erfolgreiche Glam-Metal-Band Pretty Boy Floyd. Man kam auf den Namen, da ein gemeinsamer Auftritt mit jener Band geplant war, der von Pretty Boy Floyd jedoch abgesagt wurde. Eigentlich wollte man den Namen nur für diesen einen Auftritt annehmen, um die Unterschiedlichkeit der beiden Bands zu betonen, jedoch behielt man ihn bei.

 Mit der EP “As Ugly As They Wanna Be” (1991) sowie dem ersten  vollständigen Album “America's Least Wanted” (1992) erlangten  Ugly Kid Joe jeweils Doppelplatin. Die Singles “Everything About You” (1991) und “Cat's In The Cradle” (1993) waren weltweite Top 10 Hits in den Charts..

Nach zwei weiteren Album (“Menace to Sobriety” 1995 und “Motel California” 1996) und international gefeierten Tourneen u.a. Mit Bon Jovi, Van halen, Ozzy Osbourne und Def Leppard löste sich die Band 1997 vorerst auf.

Im Jahr 2009 kündete Gitarrist Klaus Eichstadt für den Sommer des folgenden Jahres eine Reunion von Ugly Kid Joe an.

In der Besetzung Crane (Gesang), Eichstadt (Gitarre), Fortman (Gitarre), Crockett (Bass) und Larkin (drums) arbeitete die Band anschließend an Songs für ein neues Album. In dieser Formation hatte die Gruppe bereits „Menace to Sobriety“ eingespielt.

Zunächst erschien jedoch 2012 in Eigenproduktion die EP „Stairway To Hell“, welche im Jahr darauf als erweiterte Version bei Metalville, dem neuen Label der Band, weltweit veröffentlicht wurde.

Die überall positive Resonanz auf die ersten neuen Ugly Kid Joe Stücke seit 16 Jahren beflügelte die Band mit „Uglier Than They Used Ta Be“ 2015  erneut ein vollständiges Studioalbum folgen zu lassen.

 The name Ugly Kid Joe is an allusion to the glam metal band Pretty Boy Floyd, which was quite successful in the 80s. The name was chosen because a joint gig with that band was planned, but Pretty Boy Floyd cancelled it. Actually they wanted to use the name only for this one gig to emphasize the difference between the two bands, but they kept it.

  With the EP "As Ugly As They Wanna Be" (1991) and the first full album "America's Least Wanted" (1992), Ugly Kid Joe achieved double platinum. The singles "Everything About You" (1991) and "Cat's In The Cradle" (1993) were worldwide Top 10 hits in the charts.

 After two more albums ("Menace to Sobriety" 1995 and "Motel California" 1996) and internationally acclaimed tours with Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne and Def Leppard, among others, the band split up in 1997.

 In 2009 guitarist Klaus Eichstadt announced a reunion of Ugly Kid Joe for the summer of the following year.

 With the line-up of Crane (vocals), Eichstadt (guitar), Fortman (guitar), Crockett (bass) and Larkin (drums), the band then worked on songs for a new album. In this formation the group had already recorded "Menace to Sobriety".

 First, however, the EP "Stairway To Hell" was released in 2012 as a self-production. The following year, an extended version was released worldwide on Metalville, the band's new label.

 The positive response to the first new Ugly Kid Joe songs in 16 years inspired the band to release a full studio album again in 2015 with "Uglier Than They Used Ta Be".
